Melrose Student Helps Flood Victims in Logan West Virginia
Christopher Sullivan of Melrose, a senior at Boston College High School, spent last April vacation volunteering in Logan, West Virginia.
Sullivan and 10 other BC High students under the watchful care of faculty members, Elena Gourlis and Huy Huynh, traveled to West Virginia on a service trip.
The group began its week at the Wheeling Jesuit University. Through WJU’s Appalachian Institute, the group was connected with different service groups all over the state. Most of the week was spent in Logan, West Virginia.
Sullivan and his classmates, along with hundreds of other volunteers from all over the country, teamed up to respond to the immediate needs of the severely flooded Logan community.
“Through this experience of service to others,” said Huynh, “and connecting with those most in need, their understanding of the Jesuit motto ‘men and women for others’ has deepened, been enriched, and they are forever changed.”
This coming spring BC High will sponsor Service & Justice Immersion trips to El Salvador, The Dominican Republic, Wheeling West Virginia and Camden, New Jersey.
