Hot Off the T: Ska, Big Metal Fish and More

Five things to do in and around Boston this weekend. Walking directions are based on the Orange Line, when possible.

1) Happy birthday, Johann

The First Lutheran Church of Boston hosts a day of Bach to commemorate the maestro’s 327th birthday. The pipe organ music starts 10:30 a.m. Saturday and includes several programs. Best of all, the event is free. Take the Orange Line to Back Bay and walk 14 minutes to the church.

2) Inspiration on an island

Artists take to the water Saturday as the Boston Harbor Islands Alliance hosts a harbor cruise and creative session on Spectacle Island. Artists are encouraged to take photos, set up easels or do what else moves them starting 10 a.m. Saturday. Tickets are $14-$20 and should be ordered in advance. Take the Orange Line to State Street and walk nine minutes to catch a ferry at Long Wharf.

3) Inspiration on the shore

It’s been such a beautiful week, and yes, the temperature will dip a bit this weekend, but there’s still plenty to do outside. Take a ride on the Blue Line to visit HarborArts Shipyard Gallery in East Boston. Shows of note in this outdoor gallery include “Hazards of Modern Living,” and “The Fish.” The gallery is open from sunrise to sunset every weekend. Take the Orange Line to State Street, transfer to the Blue Line and get off at Maverick. Then walk 11 minutes to the gallery.

4) Have the Time for some good music?

Put on your best pork pie hat and skinny tie: Ska legends The Slackers take to the Middle East Downstairs stage Saturday night. Tickets are $15 for the 18+ show and doors open at 9 p.m.. Take the Orange Line to Downtown Crossing, then take the Red Line to Central Square.  Walk three minutes to the Middle East.

5) Celebrate Women’s history month

This week’s event is a walking tour of Beacon Hill. The tour is $15 and starts at the Otis House 2 p.m. Sunday. Take the Orange Line to State Street and walk nine minutes to the Otis House.
