In Latest Poll, Brown Favored over Warren

With three polls showing Democrat Elizabeth Warren in the lead but the latest showing Republican Sen. Scott Brown ahead, it's safe to say the U.S. Senate race in Massachusetts is a close one.

The U.S. Senate race is very close, according to recent polling data.

Three polls show that Democratic candidate Elizabeth Warren is in the lead among likely voters in November, but the latest poll, conducted this week, predicts a Brown victory by several points.

Neither candidate has established a large enough lead so far as to pull ahead of the polls' margins of error, meaning the highly competitive Massachusetts race will likely stay close until election day in November.

The latest poll is by the University of Massachusetts Lowell/Boston Herald, which was released on Wednesday night. Out of 524 voters surveyed from Sept. 13 to 17, 49 percent said they would vote for Brown versus 45 percent who said they would support Warren. The poll's margin of error is plus or minus 5 percentage points.

Similar to the previous polls, Brown was found to garner more support from men (20 point lead) and Warren had the support of more women (18 point lead.) Brown also leads Warren in support from independent voters by 23 points. But Warren holds a small lead over Brown among those who care the most about "fighting for the middle class."

"Brown’s apparent advantage is built on a narrowing gender gap among women and a widening gender gap among men," said Joshua Dyck, associate professor of political science and co-director of the UMass Lowell Center for Public Opinion. These numbers also represent a significant shift from December and indicate that Brown’s campaign has been especially effective at winning over independents, including those who are Democratic-leaning.”

The two candidates will meet on Thursday night in their first televised debate at WBZ studios. The debate begins at 7 p.m. on Channel 4.

This poll is a little strange 3 out of 4 polls realeased this week has Warren leading and the one that doesn't is the Conservative/Republican Leaning Boston Herald Poll. I think the Herald has some explaining about their methodology to do.

After watching the debate Ms Warren should take a step back and review all the questions she skirted and didn't answer. Warren was unprepared and showd the voters she's not ready for politics. Warren received $300K for teaching one class???? No wonder I can't afford college for my kids.

Tom,the liberal-socialist mindset is hurray for me and screw you. They want the rules to apply to you and I, but not to them. From a biased DOJ to the White House getting veto power on N.Y.Times stories the country is being overrun by Socialist-Fascists.We have too many liberals destroying this country. We don't need another one!

What we don't need are polititions like Warren. She took a $250K payoff from Travelers to screw the poor asbestos worker. She stated early in the debate she would need to raise taxes a fraction to put people to work. Warren received a zero % loan because she lied about her heritage. If you want crooked people representing your tax money then by all means vote for Warren.

Craig: It's not a biased poll or skewed methodolgy. It is sponsored by UMass Lowell. A lot of times, the article doesn't tell you whom the pollsters have polled. For example, a poll of "likely voters" is different from a poll of "registered voters". "500 Likely voters" also can represent a different group from "250 Likely Republican voters and 250 Likely Democratic voters". There are also obviously the issues of what is going in the press during the weeks that people receive calls, and the geographic location of the voters called.

You are absolutely correct to question why there is a difference, and I too find it interesting, but I wouldn't assume bias.

This must be the ranting place for real Massholes - do a little fact checking...instead of regeuritating the lies being spewed by Brown. Ms. Warren made nothing in 2012, she is on leave, she made $89K for 2011....she did not work for Travelers, she worked to establish the fund to pay the victims...duh????

News flash:Warren lied, denied and cried. She is typical of Dems who, when faced with facts, clam up! She lobbied more for big insurance and against the 'little people' she claims to stand up for. There are no Dems any more. They are Socialist-Fascists.JFK would be a moderate Republican now.
