An Explanation of "Seen & Heard on the T"

The T is one of my favorite places. Really. You get an unmatched cross-section of humanity. And you often see and hear some funny things. The kinds of things that, when you get to work, you have to tell people about.

"The woman across from me on the T this morning was clipping her toenails."

That sort of thing. (I've seen nails being clipped several times while on the Orange Line, by the way.)

Our new feature, "Seen and Heard on the T" will collect these bits of urban life so they reach a wider audience.

It's easy to share your stories, photos and videos. Here are a few ways:

I'll also patrol the Internets looking for items and gather them here. For instance—In May, a Twitter user got a photo of a Transit Police officer napping.

One note: Regrettably, a lot of the funniest stuff that you see and hear on the T isn't family-friendly. You can let us know folks were cursing in an anectdote, but please don't provide an exact transcript.

Here's an example from this Monday around 4:30 p.m. I was walking through the lower busway at Forest Hills:

Angry mother, to homeless woman: "Keep standing over here, cursing in front of my daughter. Keep [bleeping] doing it."

We'll regularly highlight items from the project on all the Patches in Boston. So keep your eyes and ears open, keep your smart phones handy, and share the weird stuff you see and hear on the T.

On the Orange Line today, I saw this white guy (his ethnicity will become important in a moment) chatting up everyone who happened to be near him. Finally, he turns to this Asian man who he clearly doesn't know and says: "I went to Chinatown yesterday and got some Chinese soup. Are you Viet-man-ese?" (Not a typo).

While running down Hanover Street in the North End a few weeks ago A group of young, well dressed, professional men stepped off the sidewalk without looking. One very serious gent turned to the group and stated " there seem to be quite a few ITALIAN restaurants around here". Some Corporation must have worked hard to recruit that crowd.....

A couple of months ago, I was heading downtown to a meeting, wearing slacks and a button-down shirt (i.e., nothing fancy). A man passing me at the turnstiles of Forest Hills goes, "Hey, buddy, how you doing? You look like Elvis."

It kind of made my day.

I was zipping by on my way through the T and overheard a few words of a conversation between two guys waiting for the Orange line. All I heard was one of the guys turn to the other and say with a truly disappointed face "You would make a horrible wizard."

I am glad that woman on the escalator was not hurt but she should be cited for her extreme stupidity. Can you imagine if a small child or elderly person had been behind her when her wheelchair tumbled. Her judgement appears severly impaired.

You make a good point, Patty, that someone beneath her could have been hurt.

What was she thinking? Maybe she wasn't thinking at all.

You mean like not using Spell Check and writing in all CAPS (that signifies yelling in print)?
