Commissioner Edward Lambert

Department of Conservation & Recreation

251 Causeway Street, Suite 600

Boston, MA 02114

Re: Ravine Road – Melrose/Stoneham

Dear Commissioner Lambert:

On behalf of the citizens of Melrose, I write to express my stern opposition to any effort to continue the current, unsafe and hazardous temporary traffic configuration along Ravine Road between Woodland Road and the Fellsway East. I have previously expressed my opposition on behalf of the many residents of Melrose, and several surrounding communities, who have contacted my office over the past several months expressing their grave concerns about the continuation of one-way traffic on Ravine Road. In fact, at a public safety meeting with residents of Wards 3 and 5 in Melrose on Oct. 23, over 75 residents spoke out in opposition to this measure at a meeting which was not intended to be dedicated solely to this ongoing issue.

As I have previously stated, this reconfigured traffic pattern is wreaking havoc for residents and commuters seeking to travel through the intersection at Pond Street, and it does not alleviate any of the perceived issues where Ravine Road intersects with the Fellsway East. It is also negatively impacting the ability of patrons seeking to visit the many restaurants and shops in downtown Melrose.  As expressed by many, this measure is being viewed as anti-small business.

To the extent there are dangerous intersections along the Fellsway, the Department of Conservation & Recreation (“DCR”) is singularly responsible for addressing these issues. In fact, I could easily argue that other intersections along the Fellsway – such as the intersections at Washington at the Fellsway East, West Emerson at the Fellsway, Melrose Street at the Fellsway, and Nelson Road at the Fellsway – are more dangerous than the intersection at Ravine Road and the Fellsway East.

I am formally requesting that this traffic measure end as of Nov. 5, 2012. During a meeting held in Stoneham on April 4, 2012 between DCR, Melrose and Stoneham officials, it was agreed that should either community desire to terminate this temporary traffic measure DCR would abide. After DCR terminates this measure, I would ask that Melrose be provided with an update as to whether, if ever, a traffic study has recently been done encompassing this area in order to flesh out professional, permanent solutions, to the extent any are necessary. As you know, the Town of Stoneham received $25,000 to be used for conducting a traffic study in this area. To date, it appears no studies have been done.

I look forward to hearing from you on this important issue.

Very truly yours,

Robert J. Dolan

I am ashamed that Dolan is Mayor of Melrose..... he does not speak for all the residents. I have never ONCE seen him down at the Ravine road intersection to check out the situation for himself. One of his "buddies" must want it to go back the way it was and he owes them a "favor." He personally could not care one way or the other. Why doesn't he try contacting and listening to some of the people that are really impacted (no pun intended) by this intersection. You are not my mayor!

Did you actually read the letter or do you just not like Mayor Dolan and will oppose anything he says? It is clear if you read the letter that he is speaking for the people who live in that area.

Let me quote the important part for you
"I have previously expressed my opposition on behalf of the many residents of Melrose, and several surrounding communities, who have contacted my office over the past several months expressing their grave concerns about the continuation of one-way traffic on Ravine Road. In fact, at a public safety meeting with residents of Wards 3 and 5 in Melrose on Oct. 23, over 75 residents spoke out in opposition to this measure at a meeting which was not intended to be dedicated solely to this ongoing issue. I take it you've been out there for the last 6 months, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to confirm that the mayor has not been out there. Save the hyperbole for another day. And further, why not step out from behind your anonimity and own your comments with your real name. It's easy to say you're "ashamed" and that there is some conspiracy to placate "his buddies" that he owes "favors" to and have zero evidence to support this.

Lastly, he IS listening to the people that are impacted by this. I am one of those people. One of the many reason I chose to live in Melrose was for the commute to my job. With the current "study" my commute (and everyone else who travels that way) has been impacted. The question is then becomes how do you balance the safety concerns (which are somewhat dubious to me) of a few dozen households versus the quality of life impact on hundreds of commuters.

Why they chose that section of Ravine Rd for one way is beyond me. There are no houses there and the majority of the folks either go left or right onto Fellsway East. If it's the residents on Ravine between Fellsway and W. Wyoming that are crying about safety issues then make that section of Ravine a one way during rush hours.

This isn't a hard problem to solve.

Did you actually read the letter or do you just AGREE with anything he says? You must be one of the "buddies" that was mentioned. Why doesn't he mention the 76 residents who agree with the road situation.

I applaud Mayor Dolan for doing his job, representing the people of Melrose who took the time to contact him and attend the meetings. In his letter, does he not call for alternative solutions which are mutually beneficial to all parties involved?

"Need a New Mayor of Melrose," post something more practical rather than just bash him. The current solution does not solve the issue of people bombing down Ravine toward Fellsway East in the mornings, many of whom blow past the stop sign there as they cross.
