Melrose Man Allegedly Attacks Police Following Armed Home Invasion

A Melrose man is accused of attacking Salem Police officers after an armed home invasion Tuesday night, according to a report on Salem Patch.

 

A Melrose man is accused of attacking Salem Police officers after an armed home invasion Tuesday night, according to a report on Salem Patch.

At 9:52 p.m. Jan. 8, Salem Police responded to an apartment on Loring Avenue on a report of a man allegedly trying to force his way into an apartment, according to the report.

Stephen Haverty, 56, of 52 Cranmore Lane, Melrose, was later arrested on several charges, including nighttime breaking and entering to commit a felony, armed assault in a dwelling to commit a felony, three counts of malicious destruction of property valued above $250, three counts of threatening to commit a crime, assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct, according to the report.

Haverty is accused of forcing his way into the apartment by breaking down a door with a shovel and then threatened several tenants, according to the report. He allegedly became combative while being placed under arrest.
