Middle School Math Team—A MathCounts Gold Level Team

The Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School Math Team recently earned Gold Level status from MathCounts, a national enrichment, club and competition program.

  • Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School Math Team: Nate Shu, Nik Castro, Colin Hegarty, Addison Dowell, Joe Valente, Abraham Zimmerman, Julian Nyland, Amanda Shu, Winnie Lin, Olivia Piffer, Maggie Clark, Ian Swan, Duncan Locke, Duncan McLeod, Kyle Yee, Claire Haldeman, Matt Mroz, Jimmy Melican, Griffin Barriss, Justin Crowley, Chris Schwarze.
  • Accomplishment: The Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School Math Team recently earned Gold Level status from MathCounts, a national enrichment, club and competition program.

In order to earn Gold Level status, the students must complete MathCounts' "Ultimate Math Challenge" and have at least 12 of the submitted Challenges have 80 percent or more of the problems answered correctly.

The team is involved in three separate competitions, according to co-coach Laurie Pereira: the MathCounts competition; the MathCounts Club; and The Intermediate Math League of Eastern Massachusetts. The team took first in its division for the Intermediate Math League this year.

This year, the the MathCounts Competiton was held at MVMMS, which hosted over 30 schools for the event.

The Math Team meets every Tuesday after school to work together to solve challenging math problems.

Each week, Melrose Patch will seek suggestions from readers for individual kids, youth groups, teens, and even sports teams that wow us with their accomplishments.
