OMG PD: Panhandler Arrested for Allegedly Demanding Money from Cop

A look at some of the interesting police stories from around the region this week, including an attack on an Iraq vet and a Tewksbury man facing 18 charges in connection with bad checks.

Somerville Man Charged With Beating Up Wounded Iraq VetA Somerville man was arraigned in Boston Municipal Court Tuesday and charged with beating up an unarmed Army veteran, who was wounded in Iraq, in front of the veteran's wife.

James Plunkett, 26, was charged with assault and battery and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon—a shod foot—according to an announcement from the Suffolk County District Attorney's office. Bail was set at $1,000 and Plunkett was ordered to stay away from the veteran, the announcement says.

Drunk Panhandler Demands Money from Undercover Cop, Gets ArrestedAfter police dispersed a crowd of drunk men from the parking lot of Rite Aid in Winter Hill, one of the men banged on the window of an undercover cop car and demanded money, according to details from a Somerville police report.

Another wandered off to Jaques Street and was caught urinating in public, the report says.

Toddler Accuses Teen of AssaultPolice were called to the Convenient 38 for a report of an assault.

According to police, a woman stated she was in line with her three-year-old son, holding his hand, when the toddler shouted “he punched me, he punched me.” The child told his mother that one of four teenaged boys leaving the store had hit him in the face.

Police spoke to the youths, who denied touching the boy. The responding officer told the woman that it was “highly unlikely” that a teenager would hit a toddler holding his mother’s hand and the woman agreed. Police cleared the scene.

Tewksbury Man Faces 18 Charges In Connection With Bad Checks:

A Tewksbury man, already facing charges for two unarmed robberies, is in trouble with the law again.

Christopher Hughes, 26, was arraigned in Lowell District Court last week, accused of passing $2,800 in bad checks to a local credit union, according to an article appearing in the Lowell Sun.

I would prefer not to read the crime news from other communities. That's not why I subscribe to Melrose Patch.

In all seriousness though, like many other articles, this one is cross-posted to several town Patches.

And heeeeeyyyyy, Melrose requires a subscription? Way to keep the riff-raff out. ;)

Hey, sorry Andrea. This article usually does pretty well for us, so there does seem to be some interest in the area. Obviously we try to keep most of it pretty local.

The previous editor delivered police logs and crime reports that were local and meaningful to population of Melrose. The information being presented here sensationalist junk with no actual value for the people of Melrose.

I just looked on the front page of Melrose Patch and saw that this was the only article besides the one on the presidential debate that was not solely intended for Melrose residents.

Yes, we do the same thing Michael, every week, with a map breaking down each major call and it's location in the city. Again, this article does very well for us and people read it every weekend. If it wasn't of interest to our readers, we'd stop running it.

What exactly is sensationalized above?

I find that when I choose not to read an article, it remains miraculously unread, almost as if I have free will or something.

last time I checked this was a free country and nobody is forcing anyone to read anything.....if you don't like it don't read it.....the biggest problem with a few people from Melrose is they think they live in an upscale community and have some chip on their shoulder.....you should always know what is going on in other communities close to you cause sooner or later it's gonna be in your lap...the whole area Malden, Melrose etc. etc. is going to sh!@#....good luck....Oh and Chris keep up the good work!

Agreed. Keep this article running. It's interesting and sometimes humorous to see the happenings in other cities. Obviously keep information on other cities consolidated into one article so it doesn't clog the local page, but other than that report away! Also, I read this same article on Somerville Patch days and days before it was posted on Malden Patch. Come on, copy over faster!
