Police: Hit-and-Run Suspect Repeatedly Drove Over Motorcyclist

The driver involved in a that sent a motorcyclist to the hospital with serious injuries allegedly ran over the victim repeatedly, according to .

Police received multiple reports of the crash between a sedan and motorcycle at Franklin Square around 8:15 a.m., according to a Melrose Police statement.

The man riding the motorcycle was stopped at a red traffic signal on Main Street northbound at the intersection of Franklin and Green streets, according to the statement, with the sedan directly behind the motorcycle at the red light. 

When the traffic signal turned green, the driver of the sedan allegedly drove forward hitting the motorcycle, knocking the motorcyclist off the bike, according to police, and sending the motorcycle veering off to the left with no driver.

"The sedan then travelled forward over the operator," the police statement said. "The operator of the sedan then placed his vehicle in reverse, and travelled back and forth over the operator several times. This is apparent based on witness accounts at the scene."

The driver of the sedan stopped and exited his vehicle for a short time, police said, while bystanders assisted the motorcyclist. The sedan driver then got back in his car, drove in reverse for "several hundred yards southbound" on Main Street, turned and drove away to the south.

The motorcyclist suffered "serious" injury and was taken to Mass. General Hospital by a Cataldo advanced life support (ALS) ambulance, police said.

Police said that they were able to identify and locate the sedan driver based on witnesses' information provided to officers at the scene, "including photographic evidence."

The sedan driver lives in a neighboring town, but the police statement did not identify him, saying that the incident remains under investigation and criminal charges are expected to be filed against him for leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash after causing personal injury.
