Readers Want to See a Brew Pub Open in Melrose in 2013
Second on the list of businesses Melrose Patch readers would like to see open in 2013 was an independent bookstore.
After asking you, our readers, what business you'd like to see open in Melrose in 2013, the majority wanted to see a brew pub set up shop in the city.
Five votes were cast in favor of a brew pub opening in Melrose to top the list.
"A decent brew pub-type place would do great. Someplace where one can go and have a really decent (not gourmet) burger and beer, nothing fancy," wrote reader Steve. "A few different local microbrews ... There's even a perfect spot for it right across from the Mobil station!"
Fellow reader bh75 added: "A restaurant with a decent bar serving local craft beers like Jack's Abby, Night Shift, Pretty Things, etc. Something more than just Sam Adams."
Wanted: An Independent Bookstore
Finishing second on the list with three votes was the idea of opening an independent bookstore in the city.
"An independent bookstore. Really, anything but another hair salon, nail salon, or pizza place," wrote reader Betsy Benagh. "We definitely have more than enough of those."
Reader Joan Rulan Donnelly concurred with Benagh's bookstore recommendation, saying, "I would love an independent bookstore in Melrose. So would my son. It would certainly be another driver to keep our spending in Melrose."
"A bowling alley or a bookstore would be wonderful," added reader Ellie Tedeschi.
What Other Businesses Should Open in Melrose?
Some of the other businesses our readers would like to see open in 2013 include a craft store, an Italian restaurant, a dollar store and a cafe.

A Brew pup with maybe some quality BBQ and burgers sounds great. Sadly Book stores are going down the same road as the village blacksmith. E-Readers are the books of the future

What is the situation with that eyesore across the street from the Mobil on Main Street? Why hasn't it been torn down and rebuilt by now? As reader Steve commented, it would be a perfect spot for a brewpub. Also, If I'm not mistaken, Caruso's has finally been vacated by the former owners. Another possibility?

Open a brew pub, definitely. Then open an independent bookstore and after a few months build another brew pub where the bookstore was.
