Report: Driscoll Takes Stand in DiMasi Trial

The Melrose resident, former Melrose Schools superintendent and state Commissioner of Education was called to the stand by DiMasi's defense team, the Boston Globe reported.

Melrose resident David Driscoll, a former Melrose Schools superintendent and state education commissioner, took the stand today in the federal corruption trial of former House Speaker Salvatore DiMasi, the Boston Globe reported.

The Globe reported that Driscoll was the first witness called by DiMasi's defense against charges that the former House Speaker steered contracts to a Burlington software company in exchange for kickbacks.

Driscoll served as the state education commissioner from 1998 until 2007. Prior to that, he taught math at Melrose High School until he was named assistant superintendent in 1972 and then superintendent eight years later. He stayed in Melrose until 1993, when he became the state's deputy commissioner of education.
