Concord’s so-called bottle ban recently became a bylaw, Brookline recently banned plastic bags and Styrofoam cups, and Arlington’s Town Meeting this fall upheld a seasonal leaf blower ban. Meanwhile, home-cooked foods have been forced out of many schools, an ostensible attempt to protect against allergies and childhood obesity.

Banning leaf blowers is ridiculous. The ban on home-cooked food in schools is absurd to me, especially as an excuse to curb childhood obesity and allergies. It's the parents responsibilities to account for their childrens allergies, not mine. If I want to send my kid to school with a PBJ sandwich because I believe it's healthier than him eating school pizza, I should have every right to.
You want to ban something to help the kids and schools move forward and get a leg up? Ban cell phone usage in and during school. The falling scores amongst Melrose students is directly related to their complete lack of respect for their education and its facilitators. Ban cell phones in class and actually have the balls to enforce it, and I guarantee scores and grades will go up immediately.

I can understand trying to limit potential allergic reactions to food, but Josh is 100% right about cell phones. What's astonishing is that they have NOT been prohibited.

Goodbye to raking, leaf-blowing or shoveling into the street--I hate it when people or their lawn services do that. And I would not miss plastic bags one bit. Ever seen and heard the trees near a landfill rattling with tattered plastic bags? Ick. Reusables are just better bags and hold 3-4 times as much without ripping.
