Where Should A Crosswalk Be Added in Melrose?

Contribute to a lively, ongoing conversation by posting a comment below.

Last Wednesday, Melrose Patch asked you where in the city drivers ignore stop signs most. Of the nearly four dozen responses, the stop sign at Clifford and Nelson Streets received several votes from readers

Now, reader Lory Hough would like to ask her fellow readers: Where should a crosswalk be added in Melrose?

What do you think? Let us know by posting a comment in the comments section below.

I know where one should be removed. It was painted in the past few years on Upham near Gooch. Lots of children walk to school that way (I used to) and a crosswalk is a good idea, however, children cross between Gooch and Bellevue, not east of Gooch so it's not even used. There is also poor sight distance based on the vertical geometry of the roadway and no advanced signage warning of a cross walk. There aren't even handicap ramps to make it ADA accessible. It's the most randomly placed, poorly designed crosswalk I've seen in a while and creates a false sense of safety.

From what I have been told the crosswalk on Upham near Gooch was a "mistake" and should not had been put there. There are no signs there indicating it as pedestrian friendly and it's not really at a convenient place to cross. Stephen is right in saying it should be removed since it does mislead people into thinking they can cross there but does not warn oncoming cars that pedestrians could be crossing.

Since I posted the question, I will also give an answer: Somewhere on Franklin Street! It's a very busy road, as most people know, and trying to cross it is nearly impossible, unless you're down near the Highlands train station. Cars will not stop, no matter how visible you. (Or a car will stop going in one direction, but the cars going the other way won't.) I constantly need to cross Franklin on foot -- going for walks, walking home from the Roosevelt School with my 7-year-old, and visiting the park on Warren Street. We have to stand there forever, waiting for a break in the traffic, and then we race across, hoping no one flies up the street too quickly. I have seen others do this as well. I would love to see a crosswalk somewhere on the busy road, possibly at the corner of Franklin and Warren (where there is a playground) or the corner of Franklin and Walton Park.

I don't feel that Franklin St should have any crosswalks except for the ones that are there now. Franklin isn't a pedestrian street meant to be crossing on the main road. It's more a thruway for the city. The crosswalks near the Roosevelt School and the T Station are the only places people should be crossing the street on foot on any regular basis.

However, Franklin Street is the route of the 131 bus. You're dropped off on the opposite side of the street that you boarded on, so every single rider has to cross the street somewhere along Franklin when they get off or on.

We don't need crosswalks every hundred feet for the occasional resident to cross in front of their house, but honestly the distance between Vinton and Perkins without a safe crossing is too great. I agree with Lory in that either Warren or Walton would be ideal locations from first glance.

Josh, what about the kids going from the HIghlands to the middle school and high school? It doesn't make sense for them to go down to Tremont or up to Main Street. I'd really like to see one at Ashland Street, as that's the logical place for them to cross. Honestly, get rid of the one in front of Dunton Park. It's pretty useless.

There has been a need of a cross walk on Franklin for a long time. There should be one at Warren. It is where a child's park is and also where many catch or get off of the bus. trying to cross there is dangerous and has been for over 30 years. It would be easier on kids as there is a slight curve to Franklin going from walton to the highlands and people slowing down for the cross walk would help a lot and make the road safer.

Somewhere on Lebanon between Sylvan and Grove Streets. Lots of kids and commuters use Lebanon as a way to the bus and T. There is a slight hill, visibility is poor and people fly down the section due to there being no light from grove to Forest Street.
