The Shaw’s supermarket shuttle service begins today, with a trip leaving from Bunker Hill Mall, in front of the former Johnnie’s Foodmaster at 9 a.m. traveling to Shaw’s in Somerville and returning at 10:30 a.m.

There are so many small businesses that have left Melrose in the past 30 years. Here are several that I miss:
Hincheys on West Wyoming
Linemens on Franklin Street
Woolworths on Main Street
The Penny Candy store on Main Street
Candy Castle on Franklin Street
Melrose Bowling on West Emerson area
Seems Melrose is full of too many BANKS and Pizza parlors. We could use another NEW company to our small city. Let's get creative people. We don't need anymore gift shops either. Regina's is wonderful and has been around for ages. How many more of the "same type" of business does this town actually need?

I wish Regina's would open the West Foster Street entrance. You have a store fronting what could be an extension of walkable downtown, but instead they open up into the parking lot..

Well if you're going back more than one year, I too would echo missing Sweet's Stuff. I hate to say "shuttered," though, makes it sound like the town is folding up and disappearing -- obviously not the case, with thriving new businesses arriving too!

Heavenly Muffins & More, a fantastic local muffin and doughnut joint (formerly in the place now occupied by Mexico Lindo; and before that Pauli's - which I do NOT miss), which was killed by DD's extended hours.
On the NOT list: Caruso's. Speaking of which, neither the Patch nor the Free Press has followed up on the recent work going on there. It's so funny how neither press outlets for this city actually cover topics that so many people are curious about. Like, for example, how the Ravine Rd reversal this past weekend and this week has worked. And, whatever happened to the food co-op that was expected to come to Main St. And lots of other issues that get explored once but not regularly followed up.

I too am curious about all of that stuff. There's also multiple proposals for subdivisions and condo projects that I've seen on the planning board agenda, but I haven't seen any stories about them.

Percy, first on Caruso's: When I was still editor of Melrose Patch, I made inquiries about it every month, but could never get a hold of anyone who had definitive details. We still follow up on it, but frankly, if we can't get anything to report, we're kind of stuck. I was frustrated about my inability to get any news on the joint.
The Alchemy Cooperative food co-op was eyeing the former Melrose Drug space, but then D'Amici's moved in there and later Anytime Fitness, and it died on the vine. The website's gone — http://alchemycoop.com — and they haven't held any exploratory meetings in quite a while. Thought I had reported that at one point, but I might not have (sometimes stuff is announced with great fanfare and then quietly fades away).
On Ravine Road, Melrose Patch did report (and in fact broke the news) about the reversal. Regarding how it worked, it did just happen recently and it's something to follow up on, especially with the new improvements.
Follow-ups are important, no doubt, but I'd humbly ask you to remember we have a limited staff. I'd also remind everyone that while Melrose Patch reports the news, it's not an online newspaper, and we encourage everyone to post blogs, announcements and so forth to let people know their news—a blog post by someone who regularly commutes in the Ravine Road area would be great.
If there's ever anything you're wondering about, just shoot a quick email to melrose@patch.com. A gentle reminder is always helpful.

We had requests from our Melrose Patch Facebook contingent for an update on Caruso's; however, the owner declined to provide any details due to legal issues and we posted that update to our Facebook page. That said, he may be able to provide us an update on the project in January or February. We'll be checking in with him again so it's not as though it's off our radar.

The Ravine road island is not going well. You don't have to believe what I write here - just ask the guy who hit it in the dark and blew out his tire or the people that were trying to maneuver around it and hit and knocked down the stop sign. It is worst than before.

It is a long list for me! Wellwoods, Hills Gift Shop, Hincheys, Milton Drug, Friendlys, Garniss Market, Cerretanis, Melrose Drug, Breads & Bits of Ireland, Carusos, Melrose Coin & Stamp, Brighams....... I am sure there are some I am forgetting.... Miss Johnnies already but looking forward to Whole Foods opening. Oh, LeBlancs Pharmacy - used to go there for root beer floats way back.... Good memories

Johnnie's is sorely missed by Melrose and surrounding residents. More importantly, Johnnie's provided a walkable, reasonable grocery to many of Melrose's elderly and handicapped patrons. Getting to Shaws is a challenge for these residents that are on a fixed income with limited transportation resources.

By Dollar Tree, I mean we need one..cute little affordables for low income & little kids can buy their parents little gifts there...like a five & dime..God knows we don't need a Spa, bank, pizza parlor, restuarant, nail salon, high end gift store..so why not a Dollar Tree?!!!!!
