Whiz Kids: Makers of Math Movie, 'Mandy's Chocolate Milk Balls'

Four students made a creative, educational video about a math problem that has reached the semi-final round in the Reel Math Challenge.

Melrose Patch Whiz Kids of the Week: "Hipster's Milk Dudes," aka, Chloe Melville, Isabel Bates, Alva Ronn and Emily DiPietro.

  • School: Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School
  • Accomplishment: The group created and starred in a video about a particular math problem that has received enough votes from the public to advance to the semi-final round of the Reel Math Challenge video contest. MATHCOUNTS, which sponsored the contest, is a national club that promotes middle school math through fun and challenging problems.
  • The synopsis: Mandy, who loves chocolate malted milk balls, must figure out how many pieces of candy were originally in her bag before she shared them with her little brother and fellow math aces. The kids use an x and y plot to come up with the correct answer and seem to have a lot of fun going through the process dressed up as wizards and other characters.

Now, a panel of MATHCOUNTS judges will review the most popular 20 videos and on March 16 select four that will vie for a free trip to the 2012 MATHCOUNTS National Competition, where they would then present their videos to the participants.
