'Wake up and Wiggle' at Ell Pond Park on Friday at 9 a.m. with Roman Music Therapy Services and Melrose Patch.
We at Melrose Patch decided that the weather is so nice, we should play hooky at Ell Pond Park tomorrow morning—and Meredith Pizzi at Roman Music Therapy Services agrees. Join us on Friday, May 18 at 9 a.m. at Ell Pond Park for "Wake Up and Wiggle," an impromptu half-hour concert geared towards the little ones. Ken Reid is slated to perform Saturday, May 19 at 7 p.m. at the YMCA, 820 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge.
There have been studies showing that laughing can lead to a longer and healthier life. If that's the case, get your laugh on when Melrose native and current Stoneham comedian Ken Reid takes the stage at the YMCA in Cambridge on Saturday. Reid, who has been involved in the Boston-area comedy scene for nearly eight years, is set to perform his one-man show called "Shirt Tales" at the YMCA, 820 Massachusetts Ave., at 7 p.m. May 19. “This will be the fourth time I've had the chance to do this show in this format,” Reid said. “This is my longest show where I use Power-Point and other multi-media to tell stories about my life growing up in the area. I use my ridiculously huge tee-shirt collection as the guidelines for each story.” Reid, who is …

Joe Mulholland kicks off his fourth album with a June 8 concert at Corinthian Hall, the last event at the venue that is now closing.
The kick-off jazz concert for Melrosian Joe Mulholland's fourth album release on June 8 with also serve as the curtain call for Corinthian Hall, the refurbished banquet hall that only re-opened two years ago on Franklin Street. Kelly Carroll, Corinthian Hall's executive director, informed Melrose Patch "with great sadness" of the hall's closing in an email. After Stephen Longmuir purchased the building in 2009, Corinthian Hall was refurbished and re-opened, restored to match how the ballroom looked when it hosted its first event in 1900. Carroll said in her email that "we were just not able to generate enough income to sustain it any longer." Long-time Melrosian Mulholland will give the hall a final send-off with his jazz quartet on Friday…

It's also the last chance to see the Big Apple Circus.
The first all-female band on the Billboard charts that wrote their own music and played their own instruments is coming to Boston on Sunday. And chances are, your mother remembers them fondly. So take her for Mother's Day to see The Go-Go's at the Wilbur Theater at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $39.50-$57.20. If you're not sure who they are, check out their music here (I'm sure you heard mom humming "Vacation, All I ever wanted," when she came home from work, cooked you dinner, and tucked you in). And if mom is a little more on the wild side, this weekend is the last chance to see the Big Apple Circus in the big tent at City Hall Plaza. Tickets are $20-$100. But after Sunday, its run in Boston, which began on March 27, ends.

One of the bigger events in Boston this weekend is the opening of the SOWA Open Market in the South End.
It's a little bit farmers market, a little bit flea market, craft show and fine arts fair. But there's nothing little about it. This year is SOWA Open Market's biggest opener yet with 140 indie designers, crafters, artists, musicians, farmers, food trucks and much more, according to the people who run it. The Market opens this Sunday, May 6 in a huge space at 460 Harrison Avenue in Boston's South End. And it will be open every Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. until Oct. 28. There are four distinct sections to the lively marketplace: a farmers market area; an area where jewelry-makers and other craftsmen sell their wares; an indoor vintage market where antiques share space with kitschy items from the 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s; and a building …

Celebrate the nerd in all of us.
So maybe there are bigger events in Boston this weekend. Seth Meyers is doing two shows at the Wilbur Theater on Saturday night but both are sold out. And House of Blues is hosting a Beer and Bacon Festival on Saturday but it's sold out too. What to do? Head to Cambridge. ImprovBoston (which has it's main stage in Cambridge -- no joke) has been running a "Geek Week" from April 25-29. You can pick the show you want and buy tickets here. And if you're looking for something more high-brow, check out Alex Katz prints at the MFA.
