One of the new additions to Melrose High School this year is the Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) Pathway. The program is designed for students interested in careers in science, engineering, technology, mathematics and health professions. This program includes both academic and co-curricular components.
Students follow a recommended sequence of math, science, and technology classes which include advanced courses in each area. They are also asked to share the knowledge with others by participating in community service in the STEM areas or by serving as a classroom peer assistant in a STEM course. Students are also asked to complete a capstone project and a reflective STEM Portfolio and Laboratory Binder. During their senior year, these Portfolios will be presented to a group of STEM educators, families, interested community members, and internship partners.
Members of the STEM Pathway are already making a difference in the community! They have volunteered at several events including the MEC STEM Expo and the recent first Raiders Rumble Robot Legos competition. They have also formed teams to develop a STEM Pathway website, plan a STEM career night, and create a listing of summer programs and internship opportunities. These student-leaders are excited to share their enthusiasm for STEM with the Melrose community!
If you are a member of the community who would be willing to host a STEM participant for an internship or to speak at our career night, please email email@example.com or firstname.lastname@example.org. We also encourage you to follow us on twitter: @MelroseSTE and @C_Cardella.
