Calling all young scientists and engineers! The 2nd Annual Melrose STEM Expo will be held on Saturday, November 17 at the Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School from 1:00-4:00 pm. This year’s event will feature many hands-on activities, including a community “engineering art” project!
Sponsored by Mayor Rob Dolan and the Melrose Education Coalition, this family-friendly Expo will feature science activities and demonstrations for children of all ages. Kids can drive student-built robots, create and race LEGO vehicles, solve math challenges, and design animated computer games. Attendees will learn about the many STEM-related activities available to Melrose students (K-12), both within the school system and through community organizations.
This year’s STEM Expo also will feature a community-wide “engineering art” project coordinated by Kristina Rodolico of Melrose’s Follow Your Art. All children will help create a sculpture made of recycled materials. Please bring paper towel and toilet paper rolls to contribute to the structure.
“We want to encourage the connection between science, engineering and art,” Kristina Rodolico explained. “And working together we will use recycled materials to create an entirely unique sculpture.”
Over 500 people attended last year’s STEM Expo, and organizers expect a large turn-out this year as well. “Last year’s event was a great success and once-again demonstrated the strong interest in math and science among our young people and their families,” said Mayor Dolan. “We know that building on that enthusiasm is key to encouraging more of our students to pursue STEM related fields – in high school, college and their future careers.”

More About Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School
The most modern public building in Melrose, the new Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School (MVMMS) opened in 2007. Except for a handicapped ramp constructed in 1987 and a renovation of the auditorium completed in 1999, the original middle school - originally Melrose High School - had no significant renovations since it was built in 1933.
Today, under the stewardship of Principal Tom Brow, the middle schools offers 24 student clubs and activities and 14 intramural sports. The school was awarded a Spotlight School award by the New England League of Middle Schools in 2008.
