Fans of the big bands, including those who remember dancing to a big band at local ballrooms like the Lakeside, Kimball’s Starlite and Wonderland won't want to miss "The Big Bands Are Back" Concert/Dance" November 10 at Memorial Hall in Melrose. Dan Gabel and the Abletones, a 17-piece orchestra, features famous band arrangements from the 1930’s and 40’s. Critically-acclaimed Amanda Carr is the vocalist. The event is in tribute to Bob Bachelder, well-known bandleader with the famed “Totem Pole Orchestra”. Long time band front singer, Nancy Carr, will also be making a guest appearance in addition to many of the original Totem Pole band members. On display will be a wide array of memorabilia including pictures from the original Totem Pole Ballroom, Lakeside Ballroom and Kimball’s Starllte. The show is presented by the American Big Band Preservation Society (ABBPS), a Massachusetts-based non-profit organization whose mission is to keep big band music alive for the next generation. Amanda Carr, Nancy Carr’s daughter, is the founder of ABBPS and Dan Gabel, CEO. 24-year-old Dan Gabel, is a trombonist, bandleader, arranger, and jazz/big band historian, currently attending New England Conservatory in the graduate jazz program. Proceeds from the event will fund the ABBPS “In-school performance and clinic” programs. More info at www.AmericanBigBand.org
