On Thursday, May 31, Mayor Robert J. Dolan will once again invite Melrose youngsters to participate in the 10th annual Public Works Day at the City Yard, 72 Tremont St. Melrose residents are also invited to bring their children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, ages 8 or younger, to join in the event between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. The rain date will be June 1.
This year’s DPW Day will have a rodeo theme, and students will have the opportunity to win a sheriff’s badge by answering questions about the environment.
“DPW Day is always an enjoyable day for the children, but it also has a serious purpose,” said Dolan. “It’s an opportunity to educate our young people about the importance of our roads, water and sewer systems, stormwater systems, and recycling, and to meet the men and women who are responsible for ensuring that everything runs smoothly. This year, we have been focusing on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), and this allows the children to see those principles in real life.”
Children attending Public Works Day will take an interactive tour of the City Yard and learn about street cleaning and road repair, water and sewer maintenance, recycling, snow removal, tree trimming, composting, and more. The recreational area across the street from the City Yard will be available for those who would like to pack a lunch or snack.
