February is the month when love is in the air. It's also the perfect time to start talking about healthy relationships.  The Melrose Public Schools in partnership with the Melrose Alliance Against Violence will begin that conversation next month, and we invite you to join us.

On Tuesday, February 5th, we will hold a Kick-Off Breakfast as we mark Teen Dating Violence Awareness & Prevention Month and unveil plans for the Safe S.T.E.P.S. for Teens Project. This free event is open to all members of the community, and will be held in the cafeteria at the Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School beginning at 8:30am. Speakers will include Claire McCarthy, Boston.com's MD Mama, as well as a survivor of teen dating violence, who will share her personal story. Parents of teens and those who work with teens are especially encouraged to attend.

In 2011, Melrose was one of just nine school districts in the U.S. to receive a Safe STEPS for Teens grant, which focuses on safe and healthy relationships for middle and high school students. The first year of the grant was focused on planning purposes, while the second year, which is just now underway, focuses on implementation. Please join us at this breakfast event to learn more about Safe STEPS for Teens, and to participate in our "Love Is...Love Isn't..." Photo Project.

If you'd like to attend, please RSVP to Eve Hogan by January 30. She can be reached at (781) 462-3251 or ehoban@melrose.mec.edu.

The most modern public building in Melrose, the new Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School (MVMMS) opened in 2007. Except for a handicapped ramp constructed in 1987 and a renovation of the auditorium completed in 1999, the original middle school - originally Melrose High School - had no significant renovations since it was built in 1933.

Today, under the stewardship of Principal Tom Brow, the middle schools offers 24 student clubs and activities and 14 intramural sports. The school was awarded a Spotlight School award by the New England League of Middle Schools in 2008.
