On January 26th from 9:00AM to 2:00PM the Melrose Middle School Cafeteria and Auditorium will host a major First Lego League Competition. Teams from grades 4-8 must preregister through the www.usfirst.org website. Attendance to the competition is free and open to the public. It is an excellent way to learn how Lego League is inspiring students in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math.
This year’s competition is called Senior Solutions. Students will have prepared both projects and a complex robot. Both explore how seniors can continue to be independent, engaged and connected in their communities. For the project students will have interviewed a senior, selected a problem, and then invented a solution to the problem. In the robot competition students will explore medicine dispensing, how to climb stairs, how to maintain fitness, and many other areas of senior’s life.
Melrose has spawned a number of teams, but to date has never had a local field on which to compete. “This is like the early days of the little league baseball system of Melrose.” said James Horne event coordinator, “a lack of playing fields has limited public awareness of how fun these competitions are. We hope that this event will draw about 300 people with teams traveling from New Hampshire and Eastern Massachusetts to attend.
“This competition continues to build local strength in First Lego League in Melrose”, said John Wright, “We ran coach workshops this summer to train coaches on how to build a team. From this effort we have teams at the Lincoln, Roosevelt, and Horace Mann schools”

More About Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School
The most modern public building in Melrose, the new Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School (MVMMS) opened in 2007. Except for a handicapped ramp constructed in 1987 and a renovation of the auditorium completed in 1999, the original middle school - originally Melrose High School - had no significant renovations since it was built in 1933.
Today, under the stewardship of Principal Tom Brow, the middle schools offers 24 student clubs and activities and 14 intramural sports. The school was awarded a Spotlight School award by the New England League of Middle Schools in 2008.
