'This Whole Deal Has Gone 19'

On being 19.

Day 19 already! (Any Dark Tower fans out there??)

It's been a while since I blogged; yoga and work and bridesmaid dress shopping has been keeping me busy! But rest assured that I have not rested - I completed Class #19 this morning.

As I reached the mid-way point last week, I began to cruise through classes. I returned to the Bikram Danvers studio and had four classes in a row with the same teacher, so it was kind of a blur... I got into a groove and started to kick out my leg during Standing Head To Knee for the first time since I began to practice 3 1/2 years ago (good!) I stopped being able to touch by forehead to the floor during Standing Separate Leg Stretching (bad!) Yin & yang...

(Blogger's note: the above happy-go-lucky content was documented the morning of Tuesday June 19th. It is now Tuesday evening and everything has gone... 19!)

So rewind 9 months. I had a small, insignificant cyst on my lower scalp. The doctor wasn't worried - doesn't have to be removed unless it gets infected! A few months later it got VERY infected. And painful. They called me in for "minor surgery" and drained the sucker out (TMI?) but couldn't full remove whatever the evil core of the cyst is because it was too inflamed. They said if and when it rears its ugly head again, come back to us! Before it's too inflamed again, of course.

Return to present day. In the first pose this morning, I noticed tenderness in the back of my head. CRAP. But I quickly forgot about it as the trials and tribulations of my job took over. By lunchtime, however, I noticed again. And called the doctor ASAP. Or 9 doctors, trying to see who in a 50 mile radius could give me the earliest appointment to get this damn thing removed once and for all. If they get it fast enough before it's too infected, hopefully it will be once and done: cut me up, remove the evil core, stitch me and send me home with a strong prescription. Worst case scenario? Repeat of January's festivities: cut, drain, and leave open sore to heal on its own until - you guessed it! - when it rears its ugly head, back to the doctor! Before it's too inflamed again, of course…

Surgery is bad in general… but during the 30 Day Challenge?? Last time I was out of commission for 3 or 4 days. What a nightmare! To add insult to injury (or to infected cyst), I had put in extra hours at work this week and finagled my schedule so that I could take a vacation day Wed and enjoy the unseasonably hot first day of Summer appropriately – at the beach! Looks like I’ll be enjoying it from the doctor’s office instead…

Wed the 20th

Well I survived. It actually wasn’t as bad as it was last time.

I woke up well before my alarm went off this morning – and even earlier than the ungodly hour my alarm usually goes off – nerves! My fiancé drove me to the doctor and it all went fairly quick. It was slightly inflamed but the doc was able to cut Evil Core and some surrounding tissue out, so hopefully its ugly head will rear no more. Three stitches later, they sent me on my way. No bandage, which was interesting… what’s going on back there?? She gave me instructions to rest today – good thing Patrick installed the AC! Being stuck at home in 90+ degree weather would not be fun. I mean... I can take 90 mins of it… maaaybe 180 mins… but not all day ;) (Maybe I should work on Standing Separate Leg Stretching today?)

She also said I could wet (not shampoo, but wet) my hair tomorrow. Last time I was Miss-Stinky-Hair for 3 days. Hmm… does that mean I can go to class?? J

My plan is to rest today, go back to work tomorrow and head back to the yoga studio on Friday. The ironic thing is I was going to do a “just in case” double on Monday! But if all goes well, I can fit in a double Saturday then one more next week and still be on track to complete the 30 Day Challenge next Saturday… and most importantly, fully enjoy the celebratory drinks with Melinda and Gini!

You can’t make this stuff up! I’m convinced it happened because I decided to chronicle my adventures in this blog. Or because I tempted ka with my reference to nineteen. Greedy ka!
