June 26 solar workshop provides new options

Many people think solar panels are simply too expensive and the selection process is a time-consuming ordeal that’s just not worth the effort. While that may have been the case at one time, residents in the market for solar power now have a new range of options that simplify the search for a reliable provider and provide affordable financing plans.

On June 26, the Melrose Energy Commission (MEC) will host a free workshop that focuses on making solar installation easier and more cost-effective for local residents and businesses. It takes place at the Milano Senior Center, 201 West Foster St., at 7 p.m.

There will be a presentation by EnergySage, (www.EnergySage.com/Melrose), a company that provides on-line comparison-shopping for solar panel systems. MEC (www.melroseenergy.org) has partnered with EnergySage to bring this opportunity to Melrose residents and businesses. A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation.

“Many of the problems and issues that homeowners and businesses have with solar power will be addressed,” says Lori Timmermann, co-chair of the MEC. “It’s a significant investment and people just don’t know where to start.

“With EnergySage, you can go on-line, browse through a list of qualified solar contractors and get instant quotes. It’s like a Priceline for solar systems. This not only saves time and effort, but reduces your anxiety about the process.”

In addition to providing help with “shopping” for a solar provider, the workshop will present new and innovative financing options. “It’s probably more affordable than you think,” Timmermann says. “Solar power can reduce your electric bill significantly and it also protects you against utility rate increases.”

This workshop is made possible, in part, through a grant from the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC). Melrose is one of four communities selected to participate in the second round of MAPC’s Local Energy Action Program (LEAP).

“As a community that already had a successful Solarize Mass program, Melrose was looking for the next step to get more residents and businesses to adopt solar energy,” says Martha Grover, Energy Efficiency Manager for the City of Melrose.

“MAPC introduced us to EnergySage and this provided a solution that offers a variety of vendor options. This will lead to better pricing and a more streamlined process.”
