Melrose-Wakefield Hospital holds annual Special Care Nursery Reunion

Nov. 7, 2012 - Hallmark Health System’s Melrose-Wakefield Hospital held its 12th annual Special Care Nursery Reunion last month.

The event was well attended by approximately 70 people. Halloween was just around the corner, so children were invited to wear their costumes while enjoying an afternoon of music, activities and snacks.

“It’s great to visit with the families and see how well they are doing,” said Carol Downes, director of maternal-newborn services at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital. “We are touched that the families feel strongly enough about the care they received in the Special Care Nursery to come back year after year.”

The Melrose-Wakefield Hospital Special Care Nursery provides comprehensive nursing care and medical treatment for newborns requiring a higher level of care, scope of services and nurse-infant ratio than that available in the newborn nursery. The Special Care Nursery cares for babies who are born premature, at a low birth weight, are twins or triplets, or have medical problems at birth.

The Special Care Nursery is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week by neonatologists and specially trained neonatal registered nurses. Infants treated in the Special Care Nursery also benefit from Hallmark Health’s affiliation with Tufts Medical Center. This partnership provides access to specialists in a wide range of areas including pediatric cardiologists, neurologists, surgeons and geneticists.
