5 Things You Need To Know Today—Monday, June 4

Water and sewer rate hearing; "Jay Day" at Heavenly Licks; MHS site council meets.

1) Looking out the door I see the rain fall upon the funeral mourners: Rain likely. Patchy fog between 11 a.m. and noon. Otherwise, cloudy, with a high near 56. Breezy, with a north wind between 11 and 20 mph, with gusts as high as 34 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent. Tonight, rain likely, mainly before 1 a.m. Cloudy, with a low around 48. North wind between 10 and 14 mph. (Forecast by the National Weather Service.)

2) Parading in a wake of sad relations as their shoes fill up with water: Tonight at 8 p.m., the aldermen will pause their full board meeting for a public hearing on the proposed water and sewer rates for the coming fiscal year.

3) Do you ever remember me: Today, in remembrance of late store owner and founder Jay E. Conley. His daughter Kara, who now runs the store, writes: "As difficult as it is to believe that it has been two years without seeing his happy face; I would like to spend the day sharing happy memories and stories of the Ice cream man who brought so many smiles to peoples faces. Please take the time to come get an ice cream and help reminisce of the man we all loved so much." A portion of the proceeds from "Jay Day" will go back to the Melrose community.

4) Oh will I ever learn: The Melrose High School Site Council meets tonight at 6 p.m. On the agenda: approval of changes to the student-parent handbook.
