Here's a roundup of events for kids during school vacation this week—if we missed anything, let us know!

A whole week off school! That's right, it's February Vacation, and if your kids are looking for something to do—or you're looking to get them out of the house—here's a roundup of events.

Come Play the Animal Way at Stone Zoo

Why Go: Beat the humdrum winter routine and visit Stone Zoo during February school vacation week to learn about unique animal adaptations to the winter temperatures and how the zoo keeps them active and engaged throughout the winter using enrichment techniques. Tenative daily schedule of events:

  • 11:00 a.m.: Coyote zookeeper encounter. This is an opportunity to learn more about these fascinating animals and ask a zookeeper questions. Meet at the exhibit.
  • 11:30 a.m.: Animal Encounter in the Animal Discovery Center. Visit the Animal Discovery Center and meet one of its residents up close.
  • 1:30 p.m.: Animal Encounter in the Animal Discovery Center. Visit the Animal Discovery Center and meet one of its residents up close.
  • 2:00 p.m.: North American river otter zookeeper encounter. This is an opportunity to meet one of the zookeepers who cares for Sushi the river otter. Learn more about North American river otters and ask questions. Meet at the exhibit.

Pricing: Adults $13, Seniors $11, Children (ages 2-12) $9, Children under age 2 are free.

Winter Fun Day

When/Where: Thursday, Feb. 23, 2 p.m. / , 350 Lynn Fells Parkway, Melrose, MA | Get Directions »

Why Go: Due to the lack of snow and ice this winter, the annual Winter Carnival has been cancelled. Instead, the Recreation Department and Mayor Rob Dolan are sponsoring an indoor Winter Fun Day in the MVMMS gym for kids of all ages. Come and enjoy a bounce house, games, activities, face painting, and lots of fun surprises. Burn off some winter energy and have fun with friends and neighbors.

Why Go: In February, read and discuss "Where the Mountain Meets the Moon," by Grace Lin. Pick up a copy of the book at the circultion desk. There will be snacks at the meeting.

Playtime at the Melrose Kids Club

When/Where: Friday, Feb. 24, 10 a.m. / , 590 Main St., Melrose, MA | Get Directions »

Why Go: Take your toddler to play in a warm, open space with other children. There will be toys, music and crafts.

Pricing: Free.

Play with Legos at the Library

When/Where: Saturday, Feb. 18, 10 a.m. / , 69 West Emerson St., Melrose, MA | Get Directions »

Why Go: The library welcomes children aged 5 and older to play with Legos. No registration is necessary.
