It's All Coming Up Roses. And Lilies. Also, Hydrangeas.

Time to give Martha Stewart a run for her money.

Sure, there's nothing wrong with the hundreds of little dandelion bouquets currently decorating your windowsills and counters. But isn't it time someone in the household over, say, 12 years old tried her hand at flower arranging?

We say yes. And with Mother's Day fast approaching, we also say: Indulge. Dogwood Floral Design, part of the Melrose business scene since 2010 and open to the public since December, is now offering floral design workshops. For $100, you get your very own pair of floral shears, an array of seasonal flowers, a vase or other container and three hours of very, very hands-on instruction with owner Theresa Arsenault and her fellow floral designer Meaghan Horn. Classes are limited to eight people, so lessons are intimate, taking place in Dogwood's cozy studio and complete with light refreshments.

Arsenault promises flowers you "might not be able to get your hands on otherwise," and plans to schedule classes throughout 2011, featuring seasonal themes, from autumn centerpieces to Christmas wreaths. The workshops start at 7 p.m. and require reservations.

For a list of upcoming classes (some of which have already sold out), mozy on over to Dogwood's blog or Facebook page. For even more info, call Theresa at 781-620-1982.

After all, even Martha had to start somewhere.
