The Week Ahead: Free Sundaes, Wrestling; Senior Art and Writing

A look at some events in and around Melrose this upcoming week.

This week, a cub scout pack holds registration; seniors display their art (and can take classes in art and writing); wrestling superstars come to Melrose; and everyone's invited for a free ice cream sundae.

Why Go: Pack 615 is having their annual fall registration night for new scouts. Cub Scouting is a volunteer-run program open to boys in grades one through five that combines fun with educational activities and lifelong values. Scouting encourages family and community involvement, builds self-esteem and confidence and is a good way to make new friends. Boys may join at any level.

Pricing: Registration is $35.

Where/When: 300 Commercial St., Suite 19, Malden / Daily beginning Wednesday, Sept. 14, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Why Go: Mystic Valley Elder Services celebrates seniors in the arts with the 10th annual senior art show at its headquarters in Malden. This year, Mystic Valley is also offering free arts and writing workshops to residents of Melrose who are 60 or over from Sept. 14 to Oct. 12. Registration begins September 5. Where/When: / Weekly on Wednesdays, 11 a.m.-noon

Why Go: Ed Boyd will be holding a writing workshop series for seniors. This workshop is especially designed for those who have thought about writing but never seem to get to it or just don’t think they are good enough to try writing. The one-hour workshop will be $10 for 10 weeks. Just jump right in and start writing. It’s fun!

Pricing: $10 for 10 weeks.

Where/When: / Saturday, Sept. 17, 5 p.m.

Why Go: The Melrose-based Millennium Wrestling Federation (MWF) celebrates it's 10th anniversary. The MWF, recently named 2011 Special Olympics Partners, brings a live wrestling event, autograph & photo fanfest, charity auctions, raffles and more featuring superstars known around the world from WWE and Impact Wrestling on Spike TV.

Pricing: $25 through Sept. 13; $30 at the door

Where/When: (In case of rain, ice cream will be served inside Faith Church at 200 Franklin St.) / Sunday, Sept. 18,  3-5 p.m. 

Why Go: Enjoy a free ice cream sundae! Faith Evangelical Church and A Servant's Heart Food Pantry will host the 2nd Annual Sunday Scoops Giveaway. This fun and free community event is the church and pantry's way to celebrate 15 years of A Servant's Heart Food Pantry and to say thank you for all of the ways in which the greater Melrose community supports Faith Church.
