Why Go: Skeptical of her parents’ decision to “re-side” their Long Island home with polyvinyl chloride (PVC), the seemingly benign cure-all of suburbia, Peabody Award-winning filmmaker Judith Helfand sets out to discover the truth behind the potentially toxic effects of the material, which is used in building everything from automobiles to computers, medical equipment, and children’s toys. Helfand's journey takes her around the world, unexpectedly taking twists and turns in a filmmaking pursuit that most ordinary homeowners would never dare to take.

Why Go: The Friends of Melrose Lacrosse Boosters will be holding their second annual Comedy Night fundraising event. The show features Nita Dunn, Jeanne Sullivan-Toomey, and two headliners, Bob Gautreau and Mike Donovan. Doors open at 7 p.m., shows start at 8 p.m. There will be snacks, a cash bar and raffle prizes. Tickets will be available at the door the night of the show.

Up and down, looking all around, take a break from the busy life and hike with us! Meet at Greenwood Park playground across from the Stone Zoo. Why Go: The Melrose Chamber of Commerce presents the second Showcase Melrose, an event designed to celebrate the food and beverage industry in Melrose. Huests will sample food and wine from local establishments.  A portion of the afternoon's proceeds will benefit A Servant's Heart and A Pantry of Hope.

Current participants include: Beacon Hill Wine and Gourmet, Bobby C's , Bohemian Coffee House, Breads n Bits of Ireland, The Cellar Fine Wines, Nasty Nonni's Wine and Spirits, Spice Thai, Sweet Thoughts, Turner's Seafood Grill and Market, Busy Bee Bakery, Rett's Homebaked Goodies, VCVC Cupcakes, Stearns and Hill's Bistro, Petrone's, Coffee Tea and Me, and All Season's Table.
