Why Go: Audition for the 2012 Reaching for the Stars competition, or just come watch the tryouts for $5. This high-intensity performance series takes place over four weeks of auditions (25 contestants per week), followed by semi-final (12 contestants) and final rounds (6 contestants). Three winners will be selected, with the winner receiving $500, a demo recording at a professional studio, and a concert at the Arts at the Armory Cafe. Second place receives $100 and two voice lessons with Gordon Michaels. Third place receives a gift certificate to the Arts at the Armory Cafe. The judges include Gordon Michaels, Jimmy Del Ponte, and Holli Banks. To enter, visit ArtsattheArmory.org and fill out the registration form (please follow instructions closely).

Why Go: See 'The Diary of Anne Frank,' newly adapted by Wendy Kesselman, at the Quannapowitt Players community theater. Seventy years ago this July, in an effort to escape the Nazi’s, Otto Frank led his family up the stairs to the attic that was to be their home for almost two years. The Quannapowitt Players dedicate these performances in remembrance of all those who lost their lives to the Holocaust.

Why Go: Every Friday night the Common Ground teen center is open for grades 6-9. During the school year Band Nights will take place on selected nights for grades 9-12. No admittance after 9 p.m. There is a $3 fee for entry. All persons attending must complete a waiver on the file website, at the Melrose YMCA or at the Sports Center on Tremont St.  Qualified staff supervises the center and coordinates activities. The center offers billards, ping pong, a stand up arcade game, PS2 with Rockband and Guitar Hero, Nintendo Wii, a full sized gym for activities like basketball and dodgeball, board games, and plenty of comfy furniture.

Why Go: The Melrose High School Concert Band and Jazz Band are performing at Memorial Hall in Melrose on Friday, May 25 at 7:30 pm. Table seating is available by reservation only. Tables accommodate 8-10 guests and refreshment service is available. This is our most popular seating, so make sure to get your reservation in early by emailing Sandy Shinkwin at jkshink@verizon.net or by calling 781-662-1372.
