Masterworks Choir Concert - Dvořák's Stabat Mater
Masterworks Chorale chorus & orchestra
Steven Karidoyanes, conducting
A tribute concert to the Chorale's past conductor, Allen Lannom
Welcome & Opening Remarks byRichard Dyer, former Senior Classical Music Critic of The Boston Globe
This performance is a tribute concert to Allen Lannom, who led Masterworks Chorale for an extraordinary 53-year tenure, from 1952 to 2005. The concert marks the fifth anniversary of his passing. The Dvořák Stabat Mater was one of Mr. Lannom’s most cherished works for chorus and orchestra.
This performance features two soloists who last sang the Dvořák with Mr. Lannom, mezzo-soprano Victoria Avetisyan and tenor Yeghishe Manucharyan. (Mr. Manucharyan was one of the heralded tenors in last season’s Metropolitan Opera production of Rossini’s Armida in New York.) Joining the performance is another featured soloist close to Mr. Lannom and Masterworks, acclaimed soprano Andrea Matthews. As Mr. Lannom would regularly introduce new vocal artists to his audiences, that part of his legacy is also honored in this tribute concert. Bass-baritone Adrian Smith completes the quartet of this esteemed roster of soloists.
