Cut. Fold. Fold. Fold. Cut. Fold. Fold. Fold. Are you making a swan? A snowman? A vase? A dragon? A very helpful and friendly group meets in the art room at the on Wednesdays at 11 a.m. for Beginner’s Origami. Participants make their own special projects under the watchful eye of instructor, Yoong McMorrow.

Why are people folding paper in Melrose? For most, it is because this fascinating Japanese art form is fun and it looks nice. But for others, it is a way to relax; a way to let the day’s tension melt away. According to Mrs. McMorrow, “It is not only great for peace of mind and spirit, but is also good therapy for people with arthritis and those seeking to regain control of their hands after surgery or a stroke.”

Anyone who has come to the Milano Senior Center or the knows of the beautiful paper swans that have been gracing our counters. A new addition is a beautiful wreath, made out of folded magazine pages.

Once you have folded your paper, it’s a snap to make a project. According to Mr. Tierney, one of the participants, “you don’t need a table or any tools. All you need is patience." The folding becomes automatic and easy. Eight pieces are cut from an 8 x 10 piece of paper, and then folded in half and half again with the swiftest of movements. Another participant, Ellie Hooton, added bright yellow folded paper onto her stark white folds to make a fan tail for her turkey with the red, orange and yellow paper. It was amazing how after just a few lessons, she was putting together a beautiful piece.

If you can fold a piece of paper, come join the class. Yoong is an energetic and a helpful instructor. Everyone participating in the weekly class helps and encourages one another. The cost is $2 per class and all materials are provided. Give it a try. You will not be disappointed and will leave with something that you created yourself.
