Polymnia Choral Society's Spring Pops Tomorrow

The concert will feature local teen talents, as well as a tribute to Rosemary Clooney.

The Polymnia Spring Pops Concert in Melrose will feature the songs of Rosemary Clooney as well as an original piece by Melrose High School student Eva Gertz, this Saturday, June 5 at 7:30 p.m., at Memorial Hall.

The concert will also feature the winners of this year's 2nd Annual Polymnia Choral Society Musical Theatre Contest, David Travis and Maria Krol-Sinclair. Traditionally the spring pops concert features a variety of selections from lighter American classics as well as music from Broadway and movies. This year, Polymnia Director Murray Kidd chose four pieces recorded by Clooney, including "Mambo Italiano" and a few lesser-known ditties.

"Clooney is someone I have always admired," Kidd said. "Her music has such a direct honesty with the audience."

Travis, also a Melrose High School student, will join the choir on one of those lesser-known Clooney songs, "Sway," as well as singing "Dance Me to the End of Love" by Leonard Cohen. Krol-Sinclair, a student at BU Academy, will be singing "Stanger to the Rain" from the 1990s Broadway musical "Children of Eden". Travis and Krol-Sinclair were chosen from a double round auditioning process in this year's contest of local high school students.

"There were no strict guidelines when it came to the elimination process," Kidd said. "But the finalists did have to present a pretty formal final performance."

Eva Gertz will perform her original piece "Blue Mission" on piano along with a visiting jazz ensemble.
