Why Go: The Victoria McLaughlin Foundation invites you to the 4th Annual Celebrate the Arts! Night. For the fourth year, the night combines the 2012 Melrose Public School Annual Art Exhibit with the Celebrate the Arts! Evening line-up. The evening will include:

  • 5-7 p.m.: Melrose Public School Annual Art Exhibit
  • 7-7:45 p.m.: Music Program featuring MHS Orchestra & Chorus
  • 7:45-8:30 p.m.: Musical Entertainment featuring MHS Jazz Band & String Quartet

Throughout the evening you will have the opportunity to purchase previously selected books for the Victoria McLaughlin Library, participate in raffles, a silent auction and make a donation to the Victoria McLaughlin Foundation.

Why Go: The Boston Common Frog Pond is excited for its newest arrival—a carousel! People of all ages are welcomed to the Boston Common Frog Pond for the opening of the carousel this Friday. The carousel is handicapped accessible. Hours of operation will be Sunday-Thursday 11 a.m.-6 p.m. and Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m.-8 p.m.

Why Go: The Name Jar by Yangsook Choi tells the story of Unhei, a Korean girl who moves to the United States with her family. She wants to choose an American name and her classmates help her by suggesting names and putting them in a jar. The story explores the conflict of maintaining one’s cultural identity when assimilating to life in a new country. On Saturday, children will be able to see and talk with the author/illustrator  of The Name Jar, Yangsook Choi, via Skype. Choi will talk about her writing, her immigrant experiences and how the The Name Jar came to be. She will also talk about her illustrating process and give a drawing demonstration. Children are encouraged to ask questions. This event is most appropriate for ages 6-10.
