MEC Workshop: Getting the Best Value in a Home Heating System

One of the major investments a homeowner will make is in a heating system. Because heating systems tend to last 20 to 30 years or more, it is important to select equipment that provides maximum comfort and saves energy. It is also important to get the best value possible by installing the right kind of system and taking advantage of financial incentives offered by utilities.

On Tuesday, March 27, the Melrose Energy Commission (MEC) is hosting a mini-workshop at the Melrose Public Library, 69 West Emerson St., on Getting the Best Value in a Home Heating System. This free program, which begins at 7 p.m., is part of the Melrose Energy Challenge, an ongoing effort by the MEC and Next Step Living to educate Melrose residents about various ways to save energy.

The featured speaker at this month’s workshop is Jack Welch, a former MEC member and current member of the Melrose Planning Board. Welch, who helped coordinate the heating and air conditioning upgrade at Memorial Hall, has more than 40 years of experience with heating and cooling systems.

At the workshop, he will describe the various options available to homeowners and explain how to choose an energy-efficient system. Two of the critical aspects of the process are 1) choosing a system that is properly sized and 2) having it installed properly.

It is also important to maximize the efficiency of a heating system by using programmable thermostats, separate zones and duct insulation.

Travis Estes of Next Step Living, a Mass Save participating Home Performance Contractor, will provide information about financial incentives, including zero-interest loans that can cover the cost of the entire system. In many cases, it is cost-effective to replace an old heating system even if it is functioning properly; the financial incentives and energy savings can pay back the cost of a new system in just a few years.

A major focus of the Melrose Energy Challenge is encouraging local residents to sign up for a free home energy assessment. So far more than 300 homeowners have taken the “Challenge” and had their homes assessed. At the mini-workshop, residents will be able to receive information and sign up for an assessment. For further details, see the Melrose Energy Commission Web site (www.melroseenergy.org).

This program is the third in a monthly series that will help residents learn about saving energy and taking better care of their homes. Future Melrose Energy Challenge mini-workshops will include solar energy for the home, and repairing and restoring windows. Melrose residents are welcome to submit ideas for the workshops by e-mailing the MEC at info@melroseenergy.org.
