Big Changes Planned for Melrose-Wakefield Hospital

Partners HealthCare System is purchasing Melrose-Wakefield Hospital.

By Les Masterson

Partners HealthCare System announced it has signed an agreement to purchase Hallmark Health hospitals, including Melrose-Wakefield Hospital and Lawrence Memorial Hospital, reported The Boston Globe.

The plan includes renovating the 234-bed Melrose-Wakefield Hospital, according to The Globe. It would also convert Lawrence Memorial from an acute care hospital with 134 beds to a short-stay hospital with 20 to 40 beds.

“This is all about how we coordinate care, putting the right care in the right place while emphasizing our commitment to community needs,” Partners chief executive Gary L. Gottlieb said in an interview with The Globe.

The plan still needs state and federal approval.
