Melrose Makes Top 10 List of Best Places in Massachusetts for Job Seekers

Melrose recently made NerdWallet's top 10 list of "The Best Places in Massachusetts for Job Seekers."

Melrose ranked sixth on the list, finishing behind Newton, Everett, Revere, Malden and Marlborough, respectively.

According to the list, Melrose saw the least population growth from 2009 to 2012, increasing 1.3 percent.

Meanwhile, Melrose had the second-highest median household income in 2011, earning $84,599, finishing behind Newton with $109,724. In 2011, Melrose's $829 in monthly homeowner costs also placed second on the list, trailing only Newton at $1,000.

As far as the 2013 unemployment rate is concerned, Melrose had the fourth lowest, coming in at 5.9 percent, while Newton (5.2 percent), Waltham (5.5) and Marlborough (5.7) had lower rates, respectively. 

"Many of Melrose’s top employers are healthcare facilities, such as Melrose-Wakefield Hospital, Golden LivingCenters and EPOCH Senior Healthcare of Melrose," reads the report. "The Melrose Chamber of Commerce provides local businesses with services such as online advertising, networking opportunities within the city and even member discounts."

Data related to city growth, affordable living and the unemployment rate were used to compile the report.

"We assessed population growth from 2009 to 2012 to ensure that the city was attracting workers," reads the report. "We measured a city’s median household income to see if workers made a good living. We also analyzed the monthly homeowner costs, including mortgage payments, to see if the city had a reasonable cost of living.

"We looked at the unemployment rate," the report added.
