Shop Locally in Melrose on Small Business Saturday on Nov. 24

Start your holiday shopping at locally owned stores during Small Business Saturday.

Small Business Saturday is on Nov. 24 this year, two days after Thanksgiving. It is a day for everyone to support the small businesses that their community thrives on.

American Express founded the day in 2010 to help small businesses get exposure during the holiday season, when they might be otherwise overlooked. With retailers buzzing around the holidays, it is important to support local small businesses that rely on their neighbors in order to continue prospering and building the local economy in Melrose.

"Our local small businesses demonstrate that outstanding customer service, superior product and industry knowledge, and a strong commitment to community are the best recipe for success," Sen. Katherine Clark wrote in a recent op-ed. "They offer very competitive pricing and most give back directly to our communities by hiring our friends and neighbors and donating to our schools, our sports leagues and our charitable organizations.

"...our smaller retailers are facing direct competition from national chain stores and virtual outlets like Amazon.  We want all businesses to succeed, whether they are online or brick-and-mortar.  But we also should think about what our spending decisions might mean for the retailers in our communities.

Last year, 100 million people nationwide participated in Small Business Saturday by shopping at locally owned stores to help boost the economy and their communities. You can find which local businesses are participating on this map

Everyone has locally owned businesses in their community, and shopping on Small Business Saturday is the perfect way to give back to the businesses you know and love in your community.

Shopped (early) yesterday at Turners (fish market and lunch), Hour Glass, D'Amicis, Halo Studio and Whitemore, then not so "local" but Main Street at CVS, Starbucks and Breuggers.
