Store owner John Hashem said he'll be pursuing a new career after 14 years in business in Melrose.

will close after 14 years in Melrose as owner John Hashem pursues a new career, Hashem said in an email to Melrose Patch this week.

Calling those 14 years in business "beautiful" and having met "many customers and wonderful people in Melrose," Hashem said the store will close in two weeks.

"The employees have nothing short but wonderful to me and my family, and they continue to be," he said. "Some of these customers have long gone, some stayed, and some became my friends. Today's announcement marks the end of an era and the beginning of a new one."

Earlier this year, to include a counter where he whipped up comfort foods from his native Lebanon, alongside more familiar deli staples.

While running the store, Hashem was also pursuing his degree in business and information and technology, with plans to enroll at UMass Lowell for his master's, and tending bar nights at the Middle East Restaurant and Night Club in Cambridge.

"There are no regrets in making the decision, it's hard but I had to do it," he said. "It's good for me, for my family, and I am hoping it will a wonderful experience for the future occupier of my place."

Hashem added that everything in the store will be 50 percent off for the next two weeks, until his inventory is gone.

"From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank everyone that helped me stay in business this long," he said.
