DCR Announces Extended Hours for Pools and Beaches Due to Thursday's Heat

The Lloyd Memorial Pool in Melrose is not open until June 25, but Melrosians don't have to travel far to find waterfronts staffed with DCR lifeguards.

The Lloyd Memorial Pool in Melrose is not scheduled to open until June 25, but in response to high temperatures and humidity this week, the state Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) has announced extended hours and lifeguard services at various DCR beaches, spray decks and wading pools.

The DCR announced in a press release that the following DCR waterfronts will have additional lifeguard coverage for Thursday and Friday, June 9 and 10. These beaches normally are not staffed on weekdays during the pre-season. After Friday, they will resume their weekends-only staffing until June 18, after which they will be staffed seven days a week through the summer:

  • John A. Pierce Lake, Saugus
  • Shannon Beach, Winchester
  • Revere Beach, Revere
  • Nahant Beach, Nahant
  • Carson Beach, M Street Beach & Pleasure Bay Beach, South Boston
  • Salisbury Main Beach, Salisbury
  • Cochituate State Park Beach, Natick
  • Nantasket Beach, Hull
  • Houghton’s Pond, Milton
  • Horseneck Beach, Westport
  • Wallum Lake Beach, Douglas
  • Chicopee State Park Beach, Chicopee
  • Hopkinton Main Beach, Hopkinton

Both the Artesani and the Lee Wading in Boston have been open only on weekends, but will have extended hours—opening Thursday, June 9 and Friday, June 10 from 9:30 a.m. (a half hour earlier than they have been so far this year) until 7 p.m. Both will then resume their regular “pre-season” weekends-only schedule until June 18, after which they will be open seven days a week throughout the summer. The Ryan Wading Pool in Mattapan has already been operating on a seven day schedule since Memorial Day. All three wading pools will be staffed with lifeguards.
