Early August Savings on Cheesecake to Couture

Family-friendly discounts around town this week.

August has begun, which means another summer month has ended. But we refuse to dwell on that, instead focusing on: August! Thirty-one days! Far, far away from any kind of cooler season! Celebrate with us with five extra-wonderful deals, from savings on cheesecake to a Melrose Patch-specific discount at the town's newest boutique. (As always, remember to check with merchants for additional conditions.)

Don’t forget you're part of this column too. Let us hear about deals you've seen. Just add them to our comment box, at the bottom of this page. Then come back each week and see what we’ve uncovered together.

Deal:  , you already know all about Madison Ave. of Melrose, the newest consignment boutique to arrive in town. But did you know that the mere mention of Melrose Patch can get you 10 percent off your purchase? Well, now you do. (Also! Madison Ave. is running another promotion, too: Spend $50 and get a free item from the $5 rack. Spend $100 and get something from the $10 rack.)

Good through: Melrose Patch discount runs through Aug. 31

7ate9 Bakery

Deal: Chances are that by now you are well-aware that , home to some of the best-looking in the region. In honor of National Cheesecake Day (technically July 30, but really, doesn't it deserve an entire week?), Chester is offering 10 percent off every cake you order now through Aug. 5. And since the 7ate9 Bakery business model prides itself on free delivery, you don't even have to leave the house to get your hands (er, teeth) on such deliciousness as the Peanut Butter Cup Cheesecake, the stuffed mini-cheesecakes or the Classic with Raspberry Sauce.

Good through: August 5

Deal: Public service announcement: Replacing your watch battery does not have to be sigh-inducing. Or pricey, for that matter. Get one of the most annoying items on your To Do list taken care of with a quick trip in and out of Perella Jewelers on West Emerson Street, where watch batteries are always replaced (and always Swiss-made) for only $4. (It can get even cheaper, if you score the right coupons in certain mailers, like Valpak. Also, Perella buys gold. FYI for those in need of a little extra mid-summer moolah.)

Prince Pizzeria

Deal: We're continuing with the "It's too hot to cook" excuse this week, which is why we like the idea of Meatball Mondays at Prince Pizzeria on Route 1 South. Pull into the parking lot of the old leaning tower some Monday evening and walk out with a dozen handmade meatballs, a pound of imported pasta, bread and an extra serving of sauce for only $10.99. Take that, struggling economy.

Jeanne Stitching

Local Etsy Deal: Sometimes a house needs a little handmade pick-me-up, an accent piece that draws the eye. This week's suggestion for just that: a goody from Melrosian Jeanne Beck's Etsy shop, Jeanne Stitching. The recently launched shop presently includes only a few pouches and towels, yet the detail on each item is worth the visit. (We feel a need for the Playful Dragon towel, ourselves.) Beck's designs reflect the international travel she's done, and her creations are made on sewing machines, embroidery machines and sergers she refers to by name; Beasty Boy and Mr. Ruffles are counted among them. Custom orders happily accepted. If you should be wise enough to make a selection, enter the code Melrose02176 at checkout for free and in-person delivery to Melrose only.
