  • : MEDFORD—A Medford man sent threatening to burn down black churches as result of Asperger's Syndrome, according to his attorney. Jeffrey Smith, 46, pleaded guilty in April to 13 charges alleging he sent a total of 31 letters to predominantly African-American churches, the NAACP and individuals, according to court filings. He could face up to 10 years in federal prison for 11 of the counts and 5 years for the other two. But his attorney is seeking he be admitted to a state hospital instead.

  • : MALDEN—A Malden man arrested on June 30 in connection to an Asian gambling, drug and prostitution ring, according to federal officials. Songzeng Cao, 28, of Malden was arrested and charged with operating an illegal gambling business. Cao was also charged with “were also charged with using extortionate means, including threats or actual use of violence, to collect debts, including debts owed to the illegal gambling business,” according to a statement released by U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz’s office.

 

  • : STONEHAM—To say Town Clerk John Hanright made an impact on the Stoneham community may be the understatement of the year.  Hanright, who passed away Monday night at an area hospital, was recalled with great fondness by Stoneham residents, friends and family, government officials as well as many of his fellow clerks from around the state Tuesday.
