A look back at Melrose's top stories of the week.

Our top stories of the week ...

This week we ran a three-part series on Melrose playgrounds and their condition.  of this series focused on Joan Bell, Superintendent of Mount Hood and Public Open Space, becoming a Certified Playground Safety Inspector; focused on playground injuries and how to prevent them; and part three wrapped it up on Thursday profiling .

Melrose Patch wanted to give credit where credit was due, so we brought you an article about Good Samaritan Joan Dean. Dean is on a mission: She wants to make sure that every can or box of food that comes through A Servant’s Heart Food Pantry is properly vetted so it's not past the expiration date. Melrose Patch also wanted to recognize Melrosian Wildie Ceccherini and Boston Rescue Mission CEO and President John Samaan who partnered up to raise funds for Ceccherini's earthquake-ravaged hometown in Haiti for the second year in a row.  ran in Monday's 115th installment of one of the most storied road race in the world (the Boston Marathon) to improve the lives of children in a Haitian town.

Police

There were some notable events in the including a woman reporting mid-day assault, a Bobcat stolen from construction site, and friends moving a “stolen” car.

Sports and Marathon Monday

After winning the Massachusetts and New Hampshire Championship, the  moves on to Regional Championships that will take place May 14-16 in Waterville, ME.

And speaking of being active, Melrose Patch also brought you  who finished in the top 1,000 runners in the 2011 Boston Marathon on Monday.

You Said It 

On Saturday, April 16 at the Middlesex Fells, volunteers and various organizations—who sometimes disagree over the Fells—came together for Park Serve Day, a statewide day of volunteer service organized through the state Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR).
