Melrose Under Possible Heat Wave Watch This Week

High temperatures and humidity Tuesday may not abate until weekend.

Melrose and most of Southern New England will endure oppressive heat and humidity on Tuesday that could last the rest of the week, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

The Melrose forecast for Tuesday is a high of 94 degrees. The daily high temperature is expected to stay in the high 80s throughout the week with lows around 70 and no precipitation is expected until Saturday, when thunderstorms could roll into the area.

The NWS' Taunton office this morning issued a hazardous weather outlook, saying that the combination of air temperature and humidity may exceed 100 degrees in a few locations on Tuesday, especially in the Springfield and Hartford, CT areas.

"Heat advisories or excessive heat watches may be needed," the NWS report states. An excessive heat watch means that due to the high temperature and humidity, the human body cannot maintain proper internal temperatures and people may be at risk of heat stroke, especially young children and seniors.

An air quality alert is in effect for Rhode Island today, but no air quality warnings have been issued as of yet for Melrose or any Massachusetts counties.
