Mom-Daughter Haircut Steal, Vintage Earrings and Sweet Treats on Sale

Family-friendly discounts around town this week.

Deal: We lead this week's list of deals with the business that features our current favorite sign in Melrose: New Decade, whose new window ads read, "Feeling Ugly?" You've got to appreciate humor in your hair stylists, which is why we think it's a pretty good idea for you to take advantage of the special the newly renovated salon is offering Melrose Patch readers: Moms, come in for a full-price haircut and your daughter gets her cut for free. Not one bit of ugliness there, that's for sure.

Deal: Whether you're a softcore, hardcore or not-at-all Twitter fan, it really is worth following Sweet Spot Bakery on the social media site. Simply search for and follow @sweetinmelrose, then reap the, well, sweet rewards. This past weekend's Twitter special? "Mention this tweet and we will take 20% off Bruins cupcakes all day!" Earlier Twitter-based deals have included deeply discounted red velvet goodies and 20% off the bakery's signature quiches.

Deal: Sunscreen? Check. Buckets and shovels? Check. Indulgent, page-turning beach reads? Hmm. Looks like you need to stock up. Swing by the Melrose Public Library, zip past the circulation desk and duck into the alcove on your right, where the library's mini book sale is now running. The beach books are abundant: James Patterson, J.A. Jance, Diane Mott Davidson. There's even a little Margaret Atwood for the slightly more literary-minded. Make your selections, then pay what you think is fair. The library thanks you.

Northeast Nursery

Deal: Let us guess: You still need at least three more tomato plants, a potted wave petunia and an eye-catching perennial. All that growing goodness adds up, doesn't it? Go to the Web site for Peabody's Northeast Nursery (back to Route 1 we go!) and sign up for the free Green Thumb Club mailing list. Then take your brand-new 5% club discount and apply it to your on-site purchase. Five percent off? That's got to be worth at least a few tomatoes, right there.

LifesLemons

Local Etsy Deal: In this age of upcycyling and rampant reuse, it's easy to get behind an Etsy shopowner such as Malden's Sara Lemelin. She hunts down old maps and upcycles them into gift bows and bunting. She rescues costume jewelry from estate sales and adds a modern spin. And she knows how to offer a fierce discount. Visit her shop, LifesLemons, peruse the goods (Sarah is adding to her shop regularly) and then enter the code MELROSEPATCHROCKS for a very chic 15% discount on your order.
