Snow Brings Slippery Roads, Overnight Weather Advisory

National Weather Service projects 2-4 inches of snow to accumulate overnight.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for Melrose and the rest of southeast Middlesex County on Monday night at 8:23 p.m., after days of will-it-or-won't-it snow forecasts for Massachusetts.

Flurries that began on Monday developed into snow showers and even without significant snowfall amounts, roads quickly became slippery, leading to long commutes and reports of car accidents.

On Monday at 8:15 p.m., the National Weather Service's (NWS) Taunton office issued a winter weather advisory that will be in effect until 5 a.m. on Tuesday. The advisory said that the steadiest snow will fall through midnight, then tapering to snow showers after midnight.

The forecast calls for a possible nighttime snow accumulation of 2-4 inches. Snow showers are likely before 9 a.m. on Tuesday, with a possible new snow accumulation of less than half an inch.

"A winter weather advisory is issued when snow and/or ice is forecast to develop in the affected areas, but accumulations are expected to be light," the advisory said. "Any snow or ice would make driving and walking difficult, but not impossible, on untreated roadways and sidewalks ... motorists need to be especially careful on bridges and overpasses where slippery spots can easily develop."
