The Fourth: What's Open, Road Closures and MBTA Schedule

A wrap up of holiday weekend information.

Looking for what's allowed to be open and what will be closed this holiday weekend? Here's a partial list to help you out, along with MBTA information and and, if you're heading into Boston, road closures for the Fourth of July festivities:

  • All city, state and federal offices will be closed on Monday, July 5.
  • Banks and stock markets will be closed on Monday.
  • Restaurants, bars, convenience stores, retail stores and liquor stores will be open at the owners' discretion. Liquor stores cannot open until after noon on the Fourth, per state laws about selling alcohol on a Sunday.

If you're headed into Boston over the weekend, portions of Storrow Drive in Boston, Memorial Drive in Cambridge, and the Longfellow Bridge and Massachusetts Avenue Bridge will be closed at various points to accommodate the July 3 and 4 celebrations and fireworks.  Clean-up will begin 30 minutes after the last fireworks on July 4.  All roadways will remain closed until the clean-up is complete, expected to be Monday morning, July 5. More information is available here.

Those taking the T or commuter rail on Sunday, July 4 ride for free only from 10:30 p.m. until the end of service on Sunday. The Orange, Blue, Green and Red Lines will operate on a Sunday schedule both on Sunday, July 4 — with additional service that day for people heading to and from the Esplanade — and Monday, July 5. Commuter rail trains will operate on a Saturday schedule on the Fourth will all of the last trains — except one to Newburyport that will depart at 11:15 p.m. — departing at 11:45 p.m.
