The Week Ahead: Wine Tasting, College Nights, "The Rimers of Eldritch"

  • When/Where: RE/MAX Heritage / Tuesday, 6-8 p.m. 
  • For Who: Oenophiles supporters of Children's Hospital Boston
  • Why Go: The evening features a wine tasting provided by Beacon Hill Wine and Gourmet and light refreshments. There will be also prizes ranging from a gift certificate for a a massage, to lunch for two at Bread 'n Bits and more. A $10 minimum suggested donation at the door benefits Children's Hospital.
  • When/Where: Melrose Public Library / Tuesday, 7-8:30 p.m. 
  • For Who: Adults who want to give back to the community or are looking to bridge the gap between jobs working in a skills-based volunteer position.
  • Why Go: Learn about how Malden resident Don Chadis is strategically volunteering to gain valuable experience for his next job.  Workshop leader and Volunteer Program Manager Karen McGuire will share the strategies she uses when matching adults age 55 and older to professional, skills-based volunteer positions at area non-profits.

  • When/Where: Woburn Memorial High School / Thursday, 6-8 p.m. 
  • For Who: Students, their families and teachers.
  • Why Go: This free event hosted by Woburn High School and Woburn's Special Education Parent Advisory Council will host 15 colleges.
  • When/Where: Melrose High School Resource Center / Thursday, 7-9 p.m. 
  • For Who: Parents of MHS sophomores and juniors who want to plan ahead for the college admissions process.
  • Why Go:The night will be an opportunity to hear a brief presentation on college planning from the Guidance Department; hear from admissions representatives from six area colleges; and from a representative from College Funding Services talking about financial aid. 
  • When/Where: Stoneham Theatre / Thursday, 7:30 p.m.; Friday, 8 p.m.; Saturday, 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.; Sunday, 2 p.m.
  • For Who: Theater lovers.
  • Why Go:Nelly Windrod is on trial for murder, accused of shooting the local vagrant as he attacked a teenage girl. As the neighbors and families of the former mining town of Eldritch grapple with the sudden upheaval of their lives and struggle to understand how this could happen, long-buried secrets are revealed and the truth is unearthed layer upon layer.

  • When/Where: Memorial Hall / Saturday, 7 p.m.
  • For Who: Supporters of volunteers in Melrose Public Schools and trivia buffs.
  • Why Go: All the money raised will benefit The Bridge: A School/Community Partnership in its many activities to assist the teachers, students, and administrators of the Melrose Public Schools.

  • When/Where: Melrose Unitarian Universalist Church / Saturday, 7:15-9 p.m.
  • For Who: Anyone interested in the environment, healthy eating and organic food.
  • Why Go: What do you do when you want to grow your own food, but you don't have the land? Truck Farm is a mobile garden originally envisioned by Ian Cheney in the back of his 1986 Dodge pickup in Brooklyn, NY.   The film uses the story of his mobile farm to expand to a much larger story about urban agriculture, determined young farmers and the challenge of growing food when there is no land available. You will see the influence this movement has had on urban children, engaging them in farming, healthy eating and growing their own food.
