The Week Ahead: Fuddruckers, The Fighter, Wine Tasting, the MSO and More

Some of what's happening in and around Melrose this week.

  • When/Where: Melrose Public Library / Monday 6:30 p.m. 
  • For Who: Parents and their toddlers.
  • Why Go: Dara VanRemoortel's popular monthly bedtime program for toddlers invites children to the library in their PJs. No registration required.
  • When/Where: Temple Beth Shalom / begins Monday at 11:30 a.m.  
  • For Who: Two-to-four year olds.
  • Why Go: Mazel Tots is a 10-week program for two-to-four year olds, along with their parent or caregiver, that offers an exciting curriculum of Jewish education. The program is open to any parents and tots in the community who wish to enroll. The fee will be $60 for members and $100 for non-members of the Temple.
  • When/Where: Fuddruckers, Saugus / Wednesday 5-8 p.m.  
  • For Who: Supporters of the high school band and Fuddruckers lovers.
  • Why Go: The evening supports the Melrose High School Marching Band, Color Guard, and Winter Guard. Stop in for dinner, raffles and company. You must bring a MHS Band Fuddruckers coupon. Coupons are available at MHS in the Main Office and may be downloaded at www.melroseband.org.
  • When/Where: Milano Senior Center / Wednesday 7-9 p.m.
  • For Who: Art lovers and budding artists.
  • Why Go:Melrose designer and artist John Maciejowski will discuss his technique for abstract painting while painting a picture for those in attendance.

  • When/Where: Melrose Public Library / Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
  • For Who: Anyone who saw The Fighter.
  • Why Go: Bob Halloran is the weekend sports anchor for WCVB TV SportsCenter 5 and author of the book Irish Thunder: The Hard Life and Times of Micky Ward. Halloran was also a technical consultant for the Oscar-nominated film The Fighter starring Mark Wahlberg as Micky Ward and Christian Bale as Micky’s brother Dicky Eklund. 

  • When/Where: Mount Hood Clubhouse / Friday 7-11 p.m.
  • For Who: Oenophiles and supporters of the Franklin Early Childhood Center.
  • Why Go: Sample and learn about wines; enjoy appetizers; and view for items up for grabs in the silent auction. Proceeds go toward funding for enrichment activities for the ECC. The cost will be $20 per person or $35 per couple.
  • When/Where: Memorial Hall / Saturday 7:15-10 p.m.
  • For Who: Music lovers.
  • Why Go: The concert will feature Richard Svoboda, a long time Melrose resident and principal bassoonist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, with his daughter Erin Svoboda, an accomplished clarinetist and former member of the MSO. Concert starts at 8 p.m.; pre-concert lecture at 7:15 p.m.
